Shaking up your Shakespeare Lessons – New ideas for your classroom!
Based on American Shakespeare Center’s performances of Romeo and Juliet and Our TownDate and Time: September 8, 2016, 4:00 – 6:30 pm
No fee required. Parking not included.

Part of American Shakespeare Center’s mission is to help everyone rediscover the joy of Shakespeare through both his wordcraft and stagecraft, and to change the mindset that Shakespeare must be taught like a novel. This workshop will work within that goal, providing lesson ideas that will have your students reading, writing, and performing Shakespearean works.  Using text and themes from the upcoming HOT performances of Romeo and Juliet and Our Town, we will shake up your Literature units with new strategies.

Strategies for Teaching STEM with the Arts – Make it STEAM!
Based on Tetris + and LIVE WIRE! The Electricity Tour
Date and Time: October 13, 2016, 4:30 – 6:30 pm
No fee required. Parking not included.

Based on two shows from the HOT Season for Young People, this workshop will look at engaging ways to teach STEM concepts using the arts.  Participants will explore the show LIVE WIRE! The Electricity Tour and Tetris + while learning concepts such as the scientific method, shapes and patterns, experiments, and character education, just to name a few!  Include the arts to turn your STEM lessons into STEAM!

Poetry in Play – Playful Ideas for Practical Study
Based on Alice in Wonderland and Love that Dog
Date and Time: January 19, 2017, 4:00 – 6:30 pm
No fee required. Parking not included.

Join us for a literature-based workshop focusing on the topics of poetry, puppetry, and storytelling.  We are proud to present two performances adapted from children’s books that are particularly suited for exploring poetic text.  Join us to play with the rhythm, rhyme, and imagery in Alice in Wonderland and Love That Dog, and come away with practical lessons you can use!

Using Music to Study Social Studies and Culture
Based on Tiempo Libre
Date and Time: March 16, 2017, 4:30 – 6:30 pm
No fee required. Parking not included.

We know that music can help us learn about specific cultures and time periods in history, whether it was created as a form of protest, a means of expression, or simply as a historical record.  Using the music of Tiempo Libre as an example, we will explore topics including Cuban-American relations, musical genres, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, how art and society influence each other, and more.  Come and be inspired by the beautiful music and rich history of this amazing group.
