Over 200 Pre-K through 8th grade teachers participate in ArtSmart each year, from Metro Nashville, local private and neighboring county schools. This vibrant community of dedicated professionals believes in the importance and power of ArtSmart experiences for nurturing well-rounded learners, and for revitalizing their own joy in teaching and love of learning.
ArtSmart teachers invest their hearts, time and energy in this demanding program, so participation is self-selected by individual educators, rather than whole school faculties. 120 hours of professional development in aesthetic education are required. Twenty- to forty-hour ArtSmart seminars, offered twice annually, prepare educators to teach multi-week ArtSmart Study Units around one or more Focus Works annually.
Their professional development investment earns ArtSmart teachers the privilege of three Teaching Artist visits to their classroom for each unit they teach. The artist’s expertise is a powerful resource for the teacher, and an exciting part of the students’ preparation for their live encounter with the Focus Work of art.
