HOT SEASON FOR YOUNG PEOPLE 2009-2010

For over 20 years, teachers and students across the state of Tennessee have experienced the performing arts through TPAC Education’s HOT Season for Young People. HOT has reached more than one million kindergarten through twelfth-grade students and serves over 40,000 students annually. Performances are selected to complement curriculum objectives and to introduce students to a rich variety of artistic and cultural expression.

In 1871, the Jubilee Singers, courageous and gifted students from Nashville’s new Fisk University, set-out on a tour to raise funds for their college. In concerts across the United States and Europe, they were the first to perform spirituals before white audiences, breaking racial barriers and influencing the American music to come. The world-renowned, award-winning choral ensemble under the direction of Professor Paul Kwami shares their rich legacy and talent with a performance especially for elementary students.

Fannie Mae Dees Park

Artist Pedro Silva described the creation of this mosaic sculpture as being “…like Medieval art, where the people in a town got together and decided to build a church.” Silva’s artistic vision was realized with a multi-generational community of helpers in the Fannie Mae Dees Park. TPAC Teaching Artists lead students on special interactive tours of this whimsical piece, which has delighted countless children and visitors to the playfully nicknamed “Dragon Park.”
