Meghen Sanders, an English teacher from Stratford Comprehensive High School in Nashville, has been selected as the 2008-2009 HOT Teacher of the Year.
“HOT performances are not events to which I ‘bring’ my students,” said Sanders. “The diverse HOT performances are extensions to my English curriculum and bring a sense of enrichment and fulfillment to both my students and me. Therefore, I feel as if the HOT performances themselves ‘bring’ or entice students into TPAC. The quality, relevance, and uniqueness of each HOT performance leave a lasting, positive impact upon my students.” During the 08-09 year, Sanders accompanied her students to three HOT performances: “Luna Negra Dance Company,” “Fisk Jubilee Singers,” and “Mayhem Poets.”
Sanders’ students also played a role in her winning of the award. She did not originally plan to apply but, at their suggestion, submitted her application which was eventually accompanied by 16 enthusiastic recommendations from members of her classes.
For the 15th consecutive year, the Teacher of the Year Award is sponsored by Richard and Rhonda Small, which includes a $500 grant for the recipient’s school.
