An innocent young girl, falsely targeted by a whirlwind of rumor and lies, faces her accusers at the fire-and-brimstone revival meeting.

Rooted in Appalachian music and set in rural East Tennessee, the folk-like SUSANNAH surprisingly escalates to edge-of-your-seat intensity. Narrow-minded townspeople, jealous of young Susannah's beauty, band together to harass her and drive her away. Composed in 1955 at the height of McCarthy-era paranoia, SUSANNAH—the ultimate American opera—is crushingly relevant today, openly exploring topics that once lived in the shadow of shame and euphemism.
