DESCRIPTION

The renowned 20th century classic offers innovative and thought-provoking storytelling that suits Aquila’s bold physical style and inventive staging. Written near the end of World War II, 1984 depicts a society controlled by a totalitarian government with surveillance and harsh punishments for nonconformity. Technology is used as a weapon to inundate citizens with propaganda and to monitor their thoughts and actions. Michael Gene Sullivan’s stage adaptation of the cautionary tale is especially relevant as people across the world grapple with issues like freedom of speech, the nature of truth, political power, privacy, and the dangers of being constantly plugged in.
