Miya Robertson, a drama teacher at Gower Elementary School in Nashville, is Tennessee Performing Arts Center’s 2018 Teacher of the Year. Presented each year, the award honors an educator who uses the arts to inspire learning, build community, and foster excellence in teaching.
Talented students from 26 Tennessee high schools are seizing an opportunity to improve their skills and be recognized for theatrical and musical talent as part of the fifth annual Nashville High School Musical Theater Awards, or Spotlight Awards.
In a lively preschool classroom in Nashville, children eagerly pick up their pretend paint buckets and use imaginary brushes to paint triangles, circles, and squares in the air. They follow the lead of Holly Cannon-Hesse, one of dozens of teaching artists who play a leading role in TPAC’s educational outreach.
TPAC’s 2016-17 Annual Report to the Community highlights several new, even historic, steps made last year and the nonprofit’s commitment to keeping pace with Nashville’s dramatic growth. TPAC presented 474 performances, welcomed 350,728 audience members, served 42,944 children and adults, and had an economic impact of more than $72 million.
The great joy of learning lies in discovery. Since its inception, TPAC’s ArtSmart has enriched classroom curriculum and helped students discover the tools they need to have a meaningful encounter with a live arts experience. This deeper drive is facilitated by TPAC teaching artists at no cost to schools.
