“Unnervingly beautiful…Enduringly radical...” - Siobhan Burke, The New York Times
The MARTHA GRAHAM DANCE COMPANY has been a leader in the evolving art form of modern dance since its founding in 1926. It is both the oldest dance company in the United States and the oldest integrated dance company. During its 90-year history, the Company has received acclaim from audiences and critics in more than 50 countries. Today, it is embracing a new programming vision that showcases masterpieces by Graham alongside newly commissioned works by contemporary artists.
We the People
Choreography: Jamar Roberts | Music: Rhiannon Giddens, as arranged by Gabe Witcher
We the People is a dance of 21st Century Americana that references and reverberates with our history. Its new score by Rhiannon Giddens, as arranged by Gabe Witcher, offers the historic sound of American folk music. Its acclaimed choreographer Jamar Roberts has said, “We the People is equal parts protest and lament, speculating on the ways in which America does not always live up to its promise. Against the backdrop of traditional American music, We the People hopes to serve as a reminder that the power for collective change belongs to the people.”
CAVE
Choreography: Hofesh Shechter | Music: Âme and Hofesh Shechter
This high-energy work by Hofesh Shechter emerged out of an idea brought to the Graham Company by international dance star Daniil Simkin. Simkin was interested in taking dance that is part of the techno club scene to a new level and finding a way to integrate choreographed movement into a rave style event. As a prelude to this larger idea, Hofesh Shechter was invited to create a dance for the proscenium stage for the Graham dancers. The result is a visceral collective movement experience with a powerful, swirling shared kinetic energy.
Appalachian Spring
Choreography: Martha Graham | Music: Aaron Copland
Appalachian Spring tells the story of a young frontier couple on their wedding day. Created as the war in Europe was drawing to end, the ballet captured the imagination of Americans who were beginning to believe in a more prosperous future, a future in which men and women would be united again. Themes from American folk culture can be found throughout the dance. Aaron Copland weaves a Shaker tune, “Simple Gifts,” throughout his luminous score, while Martha Graham’s choreography includes square dance patterns, skips and paddle turns and curtsies, even a grand right and left. The spare set by Isamu Noguchi features a Shaker rocking chair. With its tale of a new life in a new land, the dance embodies hope. Critics called Appalachian Spring “shining and joyous,” and “a testimony to the simple fineness of the human spirit.”
Immediate Tragedy
Choreography: Martha Graham, Reimagined by Janet Eilber | Music: Original Music by Henry Cowell, Music for Reimagined Immediate Tragedy by Christopher Rountree
Martha Graham created this solo in 1937 in reaction to the atrocities of the Spanish Civil War. We see the woman in Immediate Tragedy as a universal figure of determination and finally, resilience. The dance was notable and well received, but when Graham stopped performing it in the late 1930s, the solo was forgotten and considered lost. In 2020, Janet Eilber reimagined the choreography for Immediate Tragedy using recently discovered photos of Graham in a 1937 performance, and many other archival references. A new score was created by Christopher Rountree inspired by pages of music hand-written by composer Henry Cowell, which were found in the Graham archives. Martha described her inspiration for this dance in a letter to Cowell, ...whether the desperation lies in Spain or in a memory in our own hearts, it is the same. I felt in that dance I was dedicating myself anew to space, that in spite of violation I was upright and that I was going to stay upright at all costs…

Esplanade
Choreography: Paul Taylor | Music: Johann Sebastian Bach
The definitive Paul Taylor work, Esplanade is at once playful, somber, romantic, and explosive. This pillar of modern dance instantly affirmed Taylor as one of history’s greatest choreographers.
An esplanade is an outdoor place to walk. In 1975, Paul Taylor, inspired by the sight of a girl running to catch a bus, created a masterwork based on pedestrian movement. If contemporaries Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg could use ordinary “found objects” like Coke bottles and American flags in their art, Taylor would use such “found movements” as standing, walking, running, sliding, and falling.
Company B
Choreography: Paul Taylor | Music: Songs sung by the Andrews Sisters
Just as America began to emerge from the Depression at the dawn of the 1940s, the country was drawn into the Second World War. In a seminal piece of Americana, Paul Taylor recalls that turbulent era through the hit songs of the Andrews Sisters. Although the songs depict a nation surging with high spirits, millions of men were bidding farewell to wives or girlfriends, and many would never return from battle. The dance focuses on such poignant dualities.
Arden Court
Choreography: Paul Taylor | Music: William Boyce
The name Arden Court is a reference to Shakespeare's As You Like It and its vision of a pastoral place of peace and beauty. Set to the music of Baroque composer William Boyce, this famous work by Paul Taylor showcases the power and beauty of male dancers, proving that the strong and powerful can also be sensitive. The backdrop is a beautiful rose - an homage to Paul's mother - creating an idyllic landscape of harmony, innocence, and romance.

Andante
Choreography: Yuri Possokhov | Music: Dmitri Shostakovich
Yuri Possokhov's captivating choreography ignites the stage as three extraordinary dancers weave a compelling tale of desire and devotion in a mesmerizing ménage à trois. Prepare to be enthralled by sleek partnering, potent athleticism, and a simmering sensuality as a radiant woman, with her elegant and languorous grace, moves between her ardent suitors. Set to the evocative music of Dmitri Shostakovich, this is a breathtakingly beautiful and powerfully moving performance that will resonate long after the curtain falls.
All That Remains
Choreography: Nicolas Blanc | Music: Ezio Bosso
This premiere work from Joffrey’s Nicolas Blanc unfolds beneath a sky of clouds and rain, where three dancers trace the contours of memory, love, attachment, and separation. Inspired by the deeply emotive music of Ezio Bosso, the work is a meditation on connection and loss – a poetic journey that nourishes Blanc’s profound artistic bond with the composer’s spirit and sound.
Under the Trees’ Voices
Choreography: Nicolas Blanc | Music: Ezio Bosso
Under the Trees’ Voices examines the persistence of community and connection in the age of distance and isolation. Set to Bosso’s Symphony No. 2, Blanc’s choreography arose from his observations of the nuances of people’s temperaments during the spring of 2020 as the weather became warmer and the chill of pandemic restrictions thawed. In four distinct sections, it imagines a future of hope and unity, reminding us that we are better together than alone.
Princess and the Pea
Choreography: Dani Rowe | Music: Jim Stephenson
From choreographic storyteller Dani Rowe comes a whimsical and comical ballet inspired by the timeless tale of "The Princess and the Pea." This modern re-envisioning has a dual nature - a surface of enchantment and humor, underpinned with universal themes of justice and freedom. When her parents are unjustly “canned and banned” in the authoritarian world of Pea Town, young Penelopea embarks on a daring quest for freedom and justice. Armed with a magical heirloom seed packet and her unexpected ally Tom, a life-sized heirloom tomato, Penelopea embarks on a daring journey to win an annual Mattress Tournament to win back her parents’ freedom. As she battles the oppressive Master Pea, Penelopea discovers the power of individuality and growth, leading to a revolution that transforms Pea Town into something no one could have ever expected.
